Bruxism is an oral condition that is gaining increasing attention from several dental and medical practitioners for its multifaceted clinical implications.

The bruxism construct has shifted from pathology to motor activity with possibly even physiological or protective relevance. An expert panel including professionals from different medical fields published two consecutive papers focusing on the definition of bruxism, as well as the first multidimensional evaluation system (Standardized Tool for the Assessment of Bruxism - STAB) and a screeening instrument (BruxScreen) to reflect the current bruxism paradigm shift from pathology to behavior (that is, muscle activity).

Bruxism is currently viewed as a complex spectrum of jaw muscle activities with different circadian distribution, multifactorial etiology, and a variety of clinical manifestations, potential consequences, and interactions with possible comorbid conditions.

Participants will thus learn that bruxism is much more than "grinding the teeth”. This lecture aims to get deeper into the world of awake and sleep bruxism with focus on their etiology, pathophysiology, clinical assessment and management, in order to help clinicians understanding the complex relationship between bruxism, the possible underlying primary conditions, and the possible clinical consequences by also discussing some interesting research projects and clinical cases. As such, dental practitioners working in the field of restorative dentistry and prosthodontics are encouraged to appraise this evolution.
